WHEN DID THE NDIS START? A BRIEF HISTORY

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was created by the Australian Government to support people with disabilities, along with their families and carers. It replaced older, less effective services with a system that offers more personalised and consistent help.

How It Began

  • 2008: The idea of the NDIS was first discussed at the Australian Government’s 2020 Summit.
  • 2009: The Productivity Commission studied whether a national disability support system was possible. The Disability Investment Group (DIG) also pushed for its creation.
  • 2011: The Commission officially recommended the NDIS, highlighting the need for reliable, long- term support

Important Milestones

  • 2012: The NDIS Act was passed, setting the scheme in motion. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) was formed to manage it.
  • 2013: The first trials began in selected areas, including the Barwon area in Victoria and the Hunter area in New South Wales.

Nationwide Expansion

  • 2016: The scheme started rolling out across Australia.
  • 2020: The NDIS was fully in place, helping over 400,000 Australians with disabilities.

Key Benefits

  • Tailored Support: Each person gets a plan suited to their needs and goals.
  • Choice and Control: Participants can select their service providers.
  • Integrated Services: The NDIS connects with mainstream services for full support.

The NDIS has changed disability care in Australia, improving independence, inclusion, and overall quality of life. It continues to grow, ensuring people with disabilities have the right support.
